Dr. James Crompton is a highly experienced Specialist Occupational and Environmental Physician with over 13 years of clinical practice in this field. He earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree from The University of Aberdeen in 2003. In November 2012, he obtained a Graduate Diploma in Occupational and Environmental Health from Monash University, followed by the Australian Certificate of Civil Aviation Medicine in July 2016.

Dr. Crompton currently serves as a treating physician at Essendon Fields Medical Centre, where he supports various employers and industries in Melbourne Airport and surrounding regions. His responsibilities include the management of injured workers and active involvement in their occupational rehabilitation, facilitating their safe return to work.

In addition to his clinical role, Dr. Crompton holds the position of Designated Aviation Medical Examiner (DAME), a role he has fulfilled for seven years. In this capacity, he conducts fitness assessments for pilots and individuals associated with the aviation industry, ensuring their continued capability to operate safely. He is also accredited to perform assessments for workers in the rail industry, demonstrating his expertise in evaluating individuals within various transportation sectors, including driving and commercial freight industries.

Dr. Crompton’s professional interests extend to the realm of substance use and its complex implications for safety-critical work. As an accredited Medical Review Officer (MRO), he specialises in assessing the intricate interactions between prescribed and illicit substances and their potential impact on safety within the workplace.

Since achieving Fellowship status with the Australasian Faculty of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (AFOEM) in 2021, Dr. Crompton has been actively involved in providing occupational medical opinions. Furthermore, he holds accreditation as a permanent impairment assessor for spinal, upper and lower limb impairments, as well as occupational infectious diseases under the American Medical Association (AMA) 4th Edition.

Dr. Crompton’s commitment to the field is evident in his previous role as the trainee representative on the AFOEM Victoria/Tasmania Regional Committee and his current position as the treasurer of the ANZSOM Vic/Tas branch.
